Search methods (see Guide § 2.6)
- Search by term (default):
- starting with (default): retrieves all terms beginning with the characters you enter
- exact match: retrieves the term corresponding to the query entered
- containing text: retrieves all terms containing the text entered, in any position
The alphabetical index provides direct access to terms starting with the selected letter.
- Search by Top Term: lists all top terms; selecting one opens its full record.
- Search by Macro-Category/Category: lists all macro-categories and categories; selecting one provides the alphabetical list of terms within each.

Search by DDC: lists Dewey Decimal Classification notations, related preferred terms, and corresponding macro-categories/categories. The field presents three options:
- starting with (default): retrieves all notations beginning with the entered numeric sequence and their equivalent terms
- exact match: retrieves only the entered notation and its related terms
- ends with: retrieves all notations ending with the entered numbers and the equivalent terms.

Advanced Search: cross-searching by term, DDC notation, and category.
- Search by historical variant:retrieves all terms previously included in the Soggettario (1956), in the Liste di aggiornamento (Update lists) (BNI 1956-1985), or in the Thesaurus itself, and which have changed form.
- Search by equivalent in other indexing tools:
retrieves terms as provided by Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Répertoire d'autorité-matière encyclopédique et alphabétique unifié (RAMEAU), Encabezamientos de Materia de la Biblioteca Nacional de España (EMBNE).
Within the options “Search by term,” “Search by historical variant,” and “Search by equivalent in other indexing tools”, the alphabetical index provides users with direct access to all entries whose terms begin with the selected initial letter.

Term record (see Guide § 2.3)
- Preferred term. The record is organised as follows:
- The term (in bold) is displayed together with clickable Hierarchy and, when available, Application manual labels, as well as its Macro-category:Category. A Scope Note or Definition may also be provided.
- equivalence, hierarchical and associative relationships: Used For (UF), Top Term (TT), Broader Term (BT), Narrower Term (NT), Related Term (RT))
- historical and/or splitting ties: Has historical variant (HSF), Used in the splitting of (UF+) (relationship between the preferred term and the non-preferred compound terms containing it)
- notes: Syntactic Note, Historical note (if any)
- further elements:
- reference sources: full titles are displayed on hovering over abbreviations. Green hyperlinks connect to the homepage of the source, whereas blue hyperlinks provide direct access to the corresponding term in the source

- Equivalents in other indexing tools: German terms from Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND), English from Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), French from Répertoire d'autorité-matière encyclopédique et alphabétique unifié (RAMEAU) and Spanish from Encabezamientos de Materia de la Biblioteca Nacional de España (EMBNE))

- Bibliographic records: provide links to BNCF OPAC records whose subjects correspond to the selected thesaurus term
- Archive and Museum resources: links to descriptions of archival documents, museum objects, and other resources in online catalogues and databases

Clicking on the Hierarchy label of a preferred term displays its hierarchical structure, both bottom-up (towards broader terms, up to the top term) and top-down (towards narrower terms). The number of dots preceding each term indicates its level within the hierarchy in relation to the starting term, helping to clarify their relationships.
For polyhierarchical terms, each hierarchy is presented separately
